Question 1

    1. Name one protective wear each used on the following parts of the body while working in an auto body repair shop
      1. eyes;
      2. nose;
      3. head;
      4. hand;
      5. foot.
  1. List four hot shrinking tools used in an auto body repair shop.
  2. Explain the purpose of each of the following materials in the finishing operations of auto body repair work:
    1. filler;
    2. surface.

Observation

The candidates that attempted this question did very well. However, a few of them could not satisfactorily answer questions 1 (b) and 1 (c). Below are the solutions of the poorly answered questions.

(b)  Hot shrinking tools used in an auto body repair shop

Shrinking hammer, mallet, wire brush, planishing hammer, dolly block, damp cloth, stake
(c)  Purposes of the use of some materials in auto body repair work
(i) Fillers
Fillers are used in auto body repair for leveling deep dents which cannot be satisfactorily filled with surfacer. They are used on the dented panels before the panels are coated.

(ii) Surfacer
Surfacers are used by spray painters to build up the coating  thickness of coated panels and fill up minor dents, such as cracks.

      2. List three materials used for auto body repair works..
  1. State two reasons for coating vehicle panels.
  2. State the first two stages of operation involved in the repair of minor damage on vehicle bumper

Observation

The Candidates did well on this question number. However, some of the candidates could not satisfactorily answer the questions asked in 2(b) and 2 (c).

To improve appearance
To provide a good base for subsequent coatings
To enhance paint sticking
To reduce the rate of corrosion on the panel
To improve the vehicle panel durability.
                                                   
(c) The First two stages involved in the repair of minor damage on vehicle
           bumper

  1. Examining the extent of damage.
  2. Selection of appropriate tools and equipment for the repair.

The Candidates did well on this question number. Some of the candidates, however, could not satisfactorily answer the questions asked in 3 (c). Below is the solution of the poorly answered question.

    1. State the function of each of the following as used on auto body panels:
      1. degreaser;
      2. rust remover;
      3. primer.
  1. State three merits of applying acid catalyst paints on vehicle bodies.
  2. List three methods of removing paint from the surface of vehicle bodies.

Observation

All questions here, except 4 (a), were adequately answered by the candidates. Here is the solution of the badly answered part of the question.

  Solution

(a)  One purpose of using some materials on auto body panels

    1. Degreaser

It is used to clear panel surfaces of grease and oily particles that may glue to it and consequently affect its aesthetic properties.
                                                                                 

    1. Rust Remover

It is used to clear panel surfaces of rust which may prevent good adhesion of paint with the panel body.
   

  1. Primer

It provides good adhesion of the paint to the panel body.
It acts as corrosion inhibitors on metals.

It provides sound base for subsequent coating.

  2. Name three sections of an auto body repair and spray painting workshop.
  3. A spray painter was paid N 6,000.00 for working in a workshop for 3 hours. How much would he have been paid if he had worked in the workshop for:   (i) 6 hours;

    (ii) 2 hours?

Observation

The Candidates that attempted this question did well; however, they could not satisfactorily answer question 5 (c). Here is the solution of the poorly answered part of the question.

PAPER 3

Question 1

  

The following materials were supplied:

  1. mild steel sheet metal 320 mm X 300 mm X 18SWG for part A;
  2. mild steel sheet metal 300 mm X 220 mm X 18SWG for part B;
  3. one tie-on label.

The diagram below shows a top hat pillar attached to a channel body-runner. Use the materials supplied to produce the component.
