Question 1
(a)(i) Identify the tool shown in the sketch above.
(ii) Name the parts labelled X, Y and Z.
(b) State two uses of the tool identified in 1(a)(i).
(c) State one function of each of the following:
- heel dolly;
- high-crowned spoon;
- body file.
Most to the candidates who attempted this question could not provide the required responses to part (a) and (b) of the question. The required responses to these parts are given below:
(ai) mallet
(aii) X is handle
Y is face
Z is head.
(b) – used in the initial stage for smoothing and roughing out a panel prior to planishing.;
– used in hot shrinking;.
– used in aluminium panel repairs.
Question 2 (a) (i) Explain the importance of spraying gun air-nozzle.
(ii) List three types of spraying gun.
(b) State three factors that determine the size of the fluid tip of a spray gun.
(c) Sketch a multiple jet air cap of a spray gun.
This question was avoided by all the candidates who sat for this paper.
The required responses to the various parts of the question are given below:
(ai) The importance of spraying gun air nozzle at the front of the gun is to direct compressed air into the steam of paint, thus atomizing it and forming the spray pattern.
(aii) – suction feed;
– gravity feed;
– pressure feed.
(b) – viscosity of paint being sprayed;
– volume of air available;
– speed of application required;
– type of paint being sprayed.
